In the promotional market, stickers are an essential offering, and fortunately, a relatively easy product to produce. Sticker applications vary widely, so it’s important to understand the different types of adhesive vinyl and compatible ink technologies to ensure the finished product adheres properly and delivers a durable, long-lasting print on the intended surface. Magnets are highly effective for temporary, reusable graphics, yet the production process involves additional considerations.

What Adhesive Vinyl Works?
Creating high-quality stickers starts with understanding the differences between adhesive vinyl options.
Permanent adhesive vinyl offers the strongest bond and is designed for long-term applications. Once applied, it is not intended to be removed and may leave residue behind if removal is attempted, making it ideal for applications such as outdoor signage and equipment labeling.
Removable adhesive vinyl is designed for temporary applications that require clean removal, such as promotional graphics, standard stickers, short-term retail signage, or event branding.
Repositionable adhesive vinyl takes flexibility a step further, allowing users to smooth out bubbles and reapply graphics during installation, making it ideal for large-format wall graphics, window displays, and other surface covering applications.
What Inks Work?
Many ink technologies can be used to print onto adhesive vinyl, with each offering unique characteristics that impact durability, flexibility, and production workflow. Most professional print shops will have at least one of these options available.
Solvent ink remains the most common choice for printing stickers due to its strong, weather-resistant durability, vibrant color, and proven performance. Because solvent ink penetrates the vinyl surface, it produces a flexible print that can conform to curved applications without cracking, making it well-suited for stickers and vehicle graphics. Many solvent ink systems also offer expanded ink sets with spot colors such as red, orange, green, white, and metallic, with some achieving an expanded color gamut for improved brand color matching. Depending on the system, solvent ink does require six to 24 hours of off-gassing time before lamination, so this is an important factor to take into account when quoting project turnaround time.

UV ink can also be used for adhesive vinyl applications and is often a preferred choice when specialty effects are required. UV ink technology enables vibrant output and supports features such as white ink and varnish for enhanced visual impact. Because UV ink cures on the surface of media, rather than absorbing into it, the printed layer is generally less flexible than solvent or resin output, which can make it more susceptible to cracking when applied to a curved or stretched surface. For this reason, UV ink is better suited to flat applications.
Setting Stickers Up for Success
Sticker production issues often stem from the wrong media for the intended application. When adhesive performance, flexibility, or curing temperatures are not compatible with the adhesive vinyl, the result can be lifted edges, cracked imagery, or poor adhesion. A common mistake is selecting vinyl based solely on appearance, without considering where and how the sticker will be used.
Glossy and matte vinyl offer distinct visual properties that can impact the final appearance and performance of the finished product. Equally problematic is failing to ask the right questions up front, such as whether the sticker is expected to be exposed to outdoor conditions or high-traffic environments. Without this information, customers could find themselves with a sticker that is not suitable for the final environment.
Low-resolution files will not produce high-quality results, no matter the ink and media selected. Before production, artwork should be reviewed for resolution, color accuracy, and proper bleed to ensure it meets cutting and finishing requirements.
Finally, production turnaround time directly impacts customer satisfaction. Most sticker jobs require lamination; turnaround expectations should align with selected ink technology, workflows, production capacity, and customer deadlines to ensure on-time delivery.
More Planning for Magnets
Magnets are similar to stickers but require additional planning for successful production. They are commonly used by local businesses, campaigns, and government agencies to keep information such as phone numbers and branding visible on metal surfaces like refrigerators, filing cabinets, desks, and vehicles.
To successfully print magnetic material, a print provider must consider its weight. Magnetic media is significantly heavier than adhesive vinyl, so printers must be able to safely handle the load, and operators must ensure no magnetic components are in the media path that could disrupt feeding or cause damage.
Ink choice is also important, as excessive heat from curing can cause magnetic media to warp. Solvent and UV inks are preferred for magnetic materials because they cure at lower temperatures or instantly. UV flatbed printers are especially well-suited for magnetic media since the heavy material can remain flat on the print bed. Because of its weight and handling requirements, magnetic material strains roll-to-roll systems and is not typically suited for high-volume runs without consideration for equipment wear.

Producing high-quality stickers and magnets for promotional use comes down to aligning media, ink, and production methods with the intended application.
For stickers, issues most often arise when the adhesive vinyl is chosen based on appearance, rather than performance, or when the ink technology, artwork quality, or finish requirements are not fully considered.
For magnets, material weight, curing temperature, and media handling introduce further complexities to the print process. The wrong ink or workflow can result in material warping, feeding issues, or equipment strain.
When print providers account for these variables upfront, they reduce waste, improve efficiency and deliver a more reliable, consistent, high-performing promotional product.
